The second day of the Brussels Capital Tournament delivered intense moments, surprises, and valuable insights into the international journey of the Italian Boxing Team. On April 25, the Azzurri and Azzurre faced top-level opponents in a highly competitive and meaningful atmosphere.

Women Leading the Way: Marchese, Vassallo, and Nicoli Advance with Determination

On the women’s side, three key victories confirmed the outstanding form of the Italian elite female team. The winning streak was kicked off by Giovanna Marchese (51 Kg), who overcame Poland’s Pril with determination, controlling the pace from the opening bell.

Another strong performance came from Martina Vassallo (51 Kg), who defeated Serbia’s Radovanovic on points. The fighter from Team Boxe Roma XI delivered a smart, tactical match, using her reach and speed to dominate.

The most anticipated confirmation came from Rebecca Nicoli (60 Kg), fresh off her gold medal win in Brazil. She beat the Dutch boxer Hejinen on points in a high-level match that showcased her tactical maturity and strong ring control.

Tough Day for the Men: Three Defeats That Don’t Define the Team’s Potential

The men’s team faced a tougher day in the second session of quarterfinal bouts. The first setback came for Giacomo Giannotti (65 Kg), who lost to Belgian fighter Tisayev. Despite a solid effort, the home boxer maintained better precision and control throughout.

Cristian Harpula (70 Kg) was also defeated by Belgium’s Ayitevi. The Fiamme Oro athlete fought hard but couldn’t overcome the rhythm and strength of his opponent.

The session concluded with a loss for Alfred Commey (80 Kg), who fell to Turkey’s Aybo. It was a challenging bout against a powerful, well-prepared opponent who capitalized on key moments.

The Team Is Solid, and the Journey Continues

Despite the setbacks, yesterday’s performance showed an Italian team that’s alive and determined, especially through the standout achievements of the women’s squad. The work of the coaching staff, led by Technical Director Giovanni De Carolis, alongside coaches Kalambay and Cirillo, and supported by physiotherapists Ciccotti and Montecchiani, is building a solid foundation for the future.

The Brussels Capital Tournament continues today with the semifinals, where several Italian boxers are ready to step into the ring and keep pushing forward.
